Always used LTC as an exchange-exchange transfer medium but 1 hour?

As the title says. I've always used LTC when transferring between exchanges. Did for the first time in a while now, and it took more than 1 hour to clear 12 confirmations(!).

Question: Is this seen as a serious problem, for I will prolly find another coin for this purpose now.

Question: Why do the require 12 confirms? Has there any been any issues with double-spend on 6 confirms?
