Stock up xmr now

5/31/2020

Comments

Buy monero now. If you're in the USA you shouldn't hold usd right now. These events draw many parallels with what happened in Venezuela and to it's currency. The combination of the fed dumping trillions and trillions of dollars into the market on top of the riots happening, make for a very bad conclusion. Dont value money over life so be safe and buy protective gear/firearms if need be but dont expect USD to be much more valuable if this chaos keeps up. Be safe. Long live monero

Am I the only one worried that exchanges will lock my funds if I'll try to cash out?

5/31/2020

Comments

I'm not even a whale so it will be chump change but still I'm kind of nervous for the upcoming years, do you think I have anything to worry about? Specifically I'll probably use Binance > convert to BTC > transfer to Coinbase > exchange for Euro > withdraw. Although it would be stupid for an exchange that accepts Monero that will lock my funds but do you think there might be problems with Coinbase? or they can't track that I exchanged Monero to Bitcoins?

My coins are totally legit bought for long hold but I know that exchanges are often oversensitive so in my mind go through various bad scenarios that somehow I'll lose my money.

Video tutorial series?

5/31/2020

Comments

Hey Monero community, I was wondering if there already was a full Monero series that explained the different components of Monero in depth. I know there are books like Mastering Monero and Zero to Monero, scattered video lectures on youtube and the main Videos that are also displayed on the getmonero.org site but is there any compilation of detailed information about Monero in a video/course format? If not are there people working on one? I really love Monero and it's been fascinating digging into the details with Zero to Monero. Usually when I learn new things in IT I really prefer youtube videos/lectures and I'm sure it's like that for most people. What I was looking to make would be kind of major parts of Zero to Monero turned into a Video format. What do you guys think?

is running a remote node heavy on hardware and bandwidth?

5/31/2020

Comments

So I downloaded the new gui wallet and I was able to download the monero blockchain and run my own local node. It's pretty cool! I was thinking of converting it into a remote node but I don't know if it's going to be too hard on the bandwidth or overheating my cpu etc. I won't be mining but just allowing others to connect to my node.

Most of the previous questions and Monero guides only discuss the advantages of running your own node and how it is better and how to run a remote node, but I haven't found anything on this question. I'm guessing overheating is not an issue but bandwidth might be (if I've a data cap)? I'd just set it up on a VPS if it's too much of hassle with hardware.

Thanks

Synching slow and can't make sense of the status

5/31/2020

Comments

I've been synching for 2 days now, i use " --block-sync-size 20 --out-peers 1" as startup flag and i'm using v0.16 at the moment. but i can see in the log that it says update needed, but GUI is already up to date and 0 in connections does it mean that i'm not getting anything from people or is all of this completely normal. just to try i started another synch location and it said v4 but on my original one, this says v5. Sorry i'm a newbie to this and can't make sense on most of these at the moment.

Skepticism Sunday May 31 2020

5/31/2020

Comments

Please stay on topic: this post is only for comments discussing the uncertainties, shortcomings, and concerns some may have about Monero.

NOT the positive aspects of it.

Discussion can relate to the technology itself or economics.

Talk about community and price is not wanted, but some discussion about it maybe allowed if it relates well.

Be as respectful and nice as possible. This discussion has potential to be more emotionally charged as it may bring up issues that are extremely upsetting: many people are not only financially but emotionally invested in the ideas and tools around Monero.

It's better to keep it calm then to stir the pot, so don't talk down to people, insult them for spelling/grammar, personal insults, etc. This should only be calm rational discussion about the technical and economic aspects of Monero.

"Do unto others 20% better than you'd expect them to do unto you to correct subjective error." - Linus Pauling

How it works:

Post your concerns about Monero in reply to this main post.

If you can address these concerns, or add further details to them - reply to that comment. This will make it easily sortable

Upvote the comments that are the most valid criticisms of it that have few or no real honest solutions/answers to them.

The comment that mentions the biggest problems of Monero should have the most karma.

As a community, as developers, we need to know about them. Even if they make us feel bad, we got to upvote them.

Publish0x - Earn Crypto for Publishing Reading Content

5/31/2020

Comments

What's Publish0x?:

Publish0x, based on the Ethereum blockchain, is a multi-crypto compatible publishing platform that incentives both its content creators and readers alike. Users earn cryptocurrency in real-time by consuming content produced by other users, maintaining their own personal blog as well as sharing great content.

The easiest way to explain Publish0x is that Publish0x is a crypto agnostic publishing platform similar to Medium, where both author and reader earn.

How to Earn Crypto by Publishing AND Reading Content on Publish0x?:

Publish0x is a crypto-agnostic platform through which content publishers AND their readers can earn crypto. When you publish content, your readers can tip you. Tips are free and come from Publish0x rewards pool! A tip is split between author and reader.

  • 1-Earn Crypto by Reading:

You don't need any crypto currency already to use the platform, infact, both the author and the reader earns on Publish 0x - yes you earn cryptocurrency while you read! How it works is that it gives you the tip and you choose how much to allocate to the author and how much to keep! Just look for this sliding tipper at the bottom of every post after you have logged in.

  • 2-Earn Crypto by Blogging:

While anyone can register, read and give tips to authors on Publish0x, currently the only way to become a publisher is to make a simple application to become an author, or to get a direct invite from the Publish0x team.

Supported cryptocurrency:

Currently the tips are in Basic Attention Token (BAT), DAI StableCoin and Hydro, and they will be adding ETH-erc20s in a future update.

Idiots how to guide?

5/30/2020

Comments

Hey all, total newbie for all things crypto here so please forgive my ignorance. I'm looking for a totally anonymous way to send and receive payments (and at some point cash out). I understand Monero is the way to go. Unfortunately though as I try to learn more about the subject everything I have watched so far seems to be geared more towards people with an existing knowledge of crypto so things are going over my head. My client base are also non tech people so I will need to walk them through the process of paying me via Monero as easily as possible to.

Could anyone point me in the direction of a sending and receiving Monero for dummies type guide? I am willing to pay an expert to walk me through the process and help me get set up if need be. Should anyone care, I'm not looking to do anything criminal at all, but for civil reasons this project must be transacted with total anonymity. I am UK based if this makes any difference.

Thanks so much in advance everyone, fingers crossed someone can help.

Monero GUI - Debian - Remote Node - unable to connect

5/29/2020

Comments

Hello.

I am a beginner user of Monero and an amateur in linux.

I am currently using Debian and wanted to use Monero-GUI. Upon installing and creating the wallet and putting a custom remote node, I rushed generated a wallet address and exchanged money.

When waiting for them to arrive I noticed that The network is shown as disconnected. After that I found a couple 100% working remote nodes, tried each one of them, none of them worked, I restarted the app, even the OS, nothing seems to help.

I did read some posts reporting this, but I could not find an exact fix for this.

Any help?

We encourage users to check the integrity of the binaries and verify that they were signed by binaryFate's GPG key. A guide that walks you through this process can be found here for Windows and here for Linux and Mac OS X.

Upgrading

You ought to perform the following steps:

  1. Download the new binaries (the .zip file (Windows) or the tar.bz2 file (Mac OS X and Linux)) from the direct download links in this thread or from the official website. If you run active AV (AntiVirus) software, I'd recommend to apply this guide -> https://monero.stackexchange.com/questions/10798/my-antivirus-av-software-blocks-quarantines-the-monero-gui-wallet-is-there

  2. Extract the new binaries (the .zip file (Windows) or the tar.bz2 file (Mac OS X and Linux) you just downloaded) to a new directory / folder of your liking.

  3. Open monero-wallet-gui. It should automatically load your "old" wallet.

If, for some reason, the GUI doesn't automatically load your old wallet, you can open it as follows:

[1] On the second page of the wizard (first page is language selection) choose Open a wallet from file

[2] Now select your initial / original wallet. Note that, by default, the wallet files are located in Documents\Monero\<wallet-name> (Windows), Users/<username>/Monero/<wallet-name> (Mac OS X), or home/<username>/Monero/<wallet-name> (Linux).

Lastly, note that a blockchain resync is not needed, i.e., it will simply pick up where it left off.

I forgot to upgrade (from CLI or GUI v0.13 to CLI or GUI v0.14) and, as a result, accidentally synced to the wrong (alternative) chain

I forgot to upgrade (from CLI or GUI v0.13 to CLI or GUI v0.14) and created / performed a transaction on the wrong (alternative) chain

Transaction stuck as “pending” in the GUI

How do I move the blockchain (data.mdb) to a different directory during (or after) the initial sync without losing the progress?

I am using the GUI and my daemon doesn't start anymore

My GUI feels buggy / freezes all the time

The GUI uses all my bandwidth and I can't browse anymore or use another application that requires internet connection

How do I change the language of the 25 word mnemonic seed in the GUI or CLI?

I am using remote node, but the GUI still syncs blockchain?

Using the GUI with a remote node

In the wizard, you can either select Simple mode or Simple mode (bootstrap) to utilize this functionality. Note that the GUI developers / contributors recommend to use Simple mode (bootstrap) as this mode will eventually use your own (local) node, thereby contributing to the strength and decentralization of the network. Lastly, if you manually want to set a remote node, you ought to use Advanced mode. A guide can be found here:

If, after reading all these guides, you still require help, please post your issue in this thread and describe it in as much detail as possible. Also, feel free to post any other guides that could help people.
