Using Bisq to trade BTC for Monero

6/30/2020

Comments

I would like to use Bisq to trade BTC for Monero but I have a few questions about it. The Bisq FAQ says that the majority of transactions go undisputed, but what are the odds that something bad happens? 5%? .001%?

Have any of you guys done it before and was it a smooth process? How long should I expect it to take? Is it dangerous to trade a large amount of money at once?

One last question: I know that both traders have to pay a deposit, but how does it work and where does the deposit go to ensure that both traders stay honest? Thanks!

Upgrading

You ought to perform the following steps:

  1. Download the new binaries (the .zip file (Windows) or the tar.bz2 file (Mac OS X and Linux)) from the official website, the direct download links in this thread, or Github.

  2. Extract the new binaries to a new directory of your liking.

  3. Copy over the wallet files from the old directory (i.e. the v0.15.x.x or v0.16.0.0 directory).

  4. Start monerod and monero-wallet-cli (in case you have to use your wallet).

Note that a blockchain resync is not needed. Thus, if you open monerod-v0.16.0.1, it will simply pick up where it left off.

Release notes

  • You can find a full change log here.

Some highlights of this release are:

  • Ledger: fix transfer with multiple inputs
  • Trezor: add support for sweep_single
  • Blockchain: fix timestamp / difficulty cache getting out of sync
  • Various minor bug fixes

A few final notes

  • The hashes of the builds were confirmed (by reproducing the build) by iDunk, hyc, selsta, gingeropolous, fort3hlulz, atroxes, defterade, and binaryFate.
  • GPG signed results can be found here: https://github.com/monero-project/gitian.sigs
  • To prune an existing blockchain file (data.mdb), you can utilize the prune-blockchain tool that is included in the binaries. Make sure to close all Monero related processes before utilizing this tool. Additionally, if your blockchain file is stored in a non-default directory, you have to make use of the --data-dir flag.
  • To enable pruning on monerod, use the --prune-blockchain startup flag.
  • Ledger Monero users, please be aware that version 1.6.0 of the Ledger Monero App is required in order to properly use CLI v0.16.

Ledger & Trezor CLI guides

  • How do I generate a Ledger Monero wallet with the CLI (monero-wallet-cli)?
  • How do I generate a Trezor Monero wallet with the CLI (monero-wallet-cli)?

P.S. If you have any questions regarding the release or need assistance with upgrading, feel free to use this thread.

How can we reduce or eliminate botnets or malicious mining?

6/29/2020

Comments

I've seen a strange increase and fluctuations in the hash rate lately and we all know it's due to server farms and other machines that got compromised.

How can we mitigate this? It brings a lot of bad publicity and hurts the addoption in a lot of ways. It also discourages real hobby miners from decentralizing the network.

From an algorithm standpoint I do not really see a solution, but what about something else?

Couldn't we perhaps raise awareness? Get in contact with the main Linux distros and try to figure out some in-built protection against mining? Not sure if Microsoft would listen but the Linux community could help out. Could we not promote safety against botnets as a fix for our issue?

Monero could be seen as privacy and security oriented. Let the world see us as the good guys for a change.

This is just my idea but i am sure we cand figure something out as a community.

MyMonero Wallet service fully restored

6/29/2020

Comments

We have fully restored the MyMonero service that has given quite a number of users a scare over the weekend when it showed incorrect balances and missing transactions.

First off your Monero is safe and was never moved or stolen. We never receive or store your spend keys. Our apps are open source and I encourage anyone using the wallets to look through the source code to understand what it is the wallet does and how it works with the Monero blockchain.

Those that experience the wallet showing a zero balance and no transactions will be able to see their balance and transactions reflecting correctly now.

For some, they experienced a never-ending X blocks behind notification, We have resolved this and your wallets are up to date and this will be a problem no more.

We do have some reports of people being presented with the import fee screen. We are working to resolve this. If you are affected by this, please contact our support and we can assist you.

Any support emails and intercom requests will be resolved over the next 24 hours as we catch up.

Given the success of the previous MAAMs (see here), let's keep this rolling.

Hello, I'm trying to send XMR from the GUI using V16 and the Ledger on the new versions, updated today.

The wallet syncs and all is fine....except when I try to send a payment to a wallet address I get the above error.

I'm using the simple version of the wallet. Not many settings to go wrong / change on the GUI.

I've got NortonLifelock on the PC but I disabled from the taskbar menu. However it blocking Coinminer Activity 3as an IPS alert on port 18080. Could that be related? I can't figure out how to eliminate that.

Can anyone help me through this ?

Growth story RespectXMR dark net pool

6/28/2020

Comments

You all monero community support this experiment of Tor pool has change my life. Generous donation of server so I can start pool many months ago and test is mining on Tor good performance? YES!

On these months, hashes growing and growing. See my old posts on specific data how Tor high performance to mining. Is much better than we all expect. And now, I am paying all fee and server prices myself. 0% fee.

At first day in January, I know nothing on pools, monerod, anything. /u/M5M400 and /u/jtgrassie so helpful to me and anonymous others who gave me first servers and help testing. Now RespectXMR grows to top 10. Today #6 pool in XMR!

Now I need help about fee because, fee can almost pay my living cost. XMR and you amazing community changing my life. If I make a fee and grow, my full incomes from Monero?! Is like Monero pay for me to build itself stronger. So cool.

Is seemed impossible but here I check. Compare others top pool.

MineXMR 1%
Nanopool 1%
SupportXMR 1% higher or lower from payout size
RespectXMR 0%

  • Change to 1% fee produce about 10 XMR in time of month.
  • Lower 0.75% fee continue fast growing produce 7.5 XMR in time of month.
  • Lowest fee 0.50% produce 5 XMR.

Servers located USA so change XMR to USD. fee 1% = $631 each month. Wow, this little pool really grow! Maybe you very rich but this is much money for me in my country. Is more than jobs. I want to continue growing so need fee correct level.

Next questions. Why TOR??

Remember, why RespectXMR only access on Tor? Is for your safety. Other pool can mine on Tor. Now you make accidental connect to check your rigs over clearnet? Clearnet balance check or payout? Privacy is removed.

RespectXMR only Tor and that mistake impossible. Your privacy protected always.

Is time to consider add clear net access so basic users connect? What do you think?

Almost forget more cool news friend! RespectXMR installs new Tor address, so you can more recognize!

How to privacy mine: Start Tor & xmrig -x 127.0.0.1:9050 -a rx/0 -o xmres2r7fiosqduq5oy2avvgtfmr3axsrjvgmfc3vh4yjxdo2pvee6yd.onion:4242 -u <ADDRESS> -p <WORKER_ID>

Skepticism Sunday June 28 2020

6/28/2020

Comments

Please stay on topic: this post is only for comments discussing the uncertainties, shortcomings, and concerns some may have about Monero.

NOT the positive aspects of it.

Discussion can relate to the technology itself or economics.

Talk about community and price is not wanted, but some discussion about it maybe allowed if it relates well.

Be as respectful and nice as possible. This discussion has potential to be more emotionally charged as it may bring up issues that are extremely upsetting: many people are not only financially but emotionally invested in the ideas and tools around Monero.

It's better to keep it calm then to stir the pot, so don't talk down to people, insult them for spelling/grammar, personal insults, etc. This should only be calm rational discussion about the technical and economic aspects of Monero.

"Do unto others 20% better than you'd expect them to do unto you to correct subjective error." - Linus Pauling

How it works:

Post your concerns about Monero in reply to this main post.

If you can address these concerns, or add further details to them - reply to that comment. This will make it easily sortable

Upvote the comments that are the most valid criticisms of it that have few or no real honest solutions/answers to them.

The comment that mentions the biggest problems of Monero should have the most karma.

As a community, as developers, we need to know about them. Even if they make us feel bad, we got to upvote them.
